Overview of Krabi

Krabi is one of the Thailand's most spectacularly beautiful destinations. Home to white sandy beaches, coral reefs rich in marine life the area is the very definition of paradise. The verdant and tree-covered islands that make up Krabi province are located in southern Thailand, 814 kilometers from Bangkok. The idyllic islands and beaches, crystal clear water, picturesque limestone outcrops and tropical rain forest and protected national parks had gained Krabi a well-deserved reputation as one of the world's most beautiful places.

Attractions

Krabi is an excellent place to learn rock climbing, There are many courses available, from half day to several days, all at very competitive prices, One school offering courses for beginners taught by professional climbers is Wee's Climbing School, Located on the main road in Ton Sai, the school was established in 1996 and operates to the highest European safety standards. The school is one of the few climbing schools in Thailand that is entirely run by climbers. The instructors and guides are well trained and offer nine courses for beginner to advanced.

Situated south of Ao Nang, eight kilometers offshore, Mu Koh Poda is fringed by clear waters, and offers white sandy beaches and pristine coral reefs. Mu Koh Poda can be reached within 25 minutes by boat from Ao Nang. Many noteworthy islands like Koh Thap, Koh Mo, Koh Hua Khwan, and Koh Kai are situated nearby. A beautiful sandy beach, connecting these islands, is visible at low tide.

After Dark

lf you are looking for local style entertainment in Krabi, it revolves around large air-con music venues. Most westerners, however, hang out in the open-fronted restaurants and bars in the main tourist areas.

Located in the centre of Krabi Town on Maharat Road, Crazy Pub features a local cover band, while nearby Room 69 has a great sound and lighting system for the live bands that play nightly. There's also a large terrace on which to enjoy the breeze and a beer. Another breezing spot, and one to enjoy a drink as the sun sets, is The Rooftop Bar on Chao Fa Road. Here you can soak in great views of the town and coastline.

Time to Visit

Krabi has a year-round tropical climate but the best time to visit is during the cool season, from November until February. However, as everybody has the same idea it can get very busy. lf you can stand the heat try visiting between April and August as there will be fewer people. The rainy season is not the best time to visit as there are frequent storms and the water is not as clear. Be aware that some resorts do close during the low season so it is always worth checking in advance.

Getting There

Krabi is located on the southwest coast of Thailand, 800 kilometers from Bangkok and 170 kilometers from Phuket. Krabi can be reached by air from Bangkok or by ferry from Phuket.

Other travel options include taking a bus from the Bangkok Southern Bus Terminal on Borommaratchachonnani Road to Krabi. The journey takes 12 hours. From the Phuket Bus Terminal, the daily bus service to Krabi takes three hours.

A train service runs from Bangkok's Hua Lamphong Station to Surat Thani, Trang, or Amphoe Thung Song, Nakhon Si Thammarat.
